Winter Safety Tips

It is extremely important to plan ahead for winter months. Here are some supplies that we recommend keeping on hand:
  • Extra set of warm clothes, boots, and gloves in your car just in case you have to walk to a shelter.
  • Wool or synthetic blanket - something warm that will dry quickly.
  • Waterproof storage bags to keep your food, blankets, and clothing dry.
  • Small shovel to dig your car out of snow, along with an ice scraper and brush to clear windows.
  • Hand-crank chargeable flashlight and matches or a lighter.
  • Bag of almonds or any food high in protein that will not go bad quickly and extra water to drink.
  • Jumper cables and tire chains.
  • Car charger for your cell phone
  • Bag of cat litter or sand in your trunk for extra weight and to help you if you are stuck.
  • Keep a close eye on your car's fluids, tires, etc. in case they need to be repaired or replaced.

Keep in mind, stores can sell out of these items early so it is always beneficial to plan ahead.

It is also smart to be aware of the weather forecast during your commuting and traveling times. Check the weather forecast and traffic conditions before you leave home. Real time traffic and weather reports are available on most phones simply by dialing 511.
